While in Iceland, you’ll learn how to make an Icelandic Lopi sweater and experience a flight over rugged highlands, glaciers, lakes, and rushing rivers to the country’s far north coast. Spend the following days traveling southward, “following the fiber” with stops at sheep and goat farms, exploring local wool and handcraft studios, yarn shops, and museums. Indulge in unique Icelandic food and culture, while you knit, laugh, and explore your way through Iceland with fellow crafters and new friends. Join us on this special journey, and discover why Iceland is one of the happiest places on earth!
Welcome to Reykjavík, the northernmost capital in the world! Upon arrival at Keflavík Airport, your Icelandic adventure begins with a visit to Sky Lagoon. There, you can enjoy the serene warmth of geothermal water, getting all the kinks out after the long flight.
Following this relaxing experience, the group will grab lunch and check into the 3-star Centerhotel Plaza, ideally located on Reykjavík’s oldest street.
The day continues with an orientation walk through the city, a stop at the renowned Handknitting Association of Iceland shop for unique woolen souvenirs, and a chance to explore a couple of food courts for an early dinner. After an exciting start, you’ll be ready for an early night to prepare for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast and an introduction meeting, set out for a delightful ramble around Reykjavík. Anna, your local Fiber Ambassador, will share her insights into both the city’s historic and contemporary aspects, enriched by her experiences as a longtime resident. Explore the shopping, business, waterfront, and neighborhood districts before heading to the National Museum of Iceland.
Being Saturday, you’ll also find extra vendors on the shopping streets and the famous Reykjavik Flea Market in full swing. Who knows what treasures await? To end the day, regroup for dinner at one of Reykjavík’s favorite restaurants and, if there’s any energy left, enjoy a drink and some knitting—a perfect way to end the day.
After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, board the bus for a journey through Reykjavík’s neighborhoods to a hands-on workshop with Auður Björt. As a local teacher and knitwear designer, Auður will guide you through the techniques for creating a lopapeysa, the iconic Icelandic patterned-yoke sweater. You’ll receive all the materials needed to craft a miniature version of this traditional garment during the workshop, thanks to Auður’s detailed step-by-step guide.
Next, catch an evening flight from Reykjavík to Akureyri. Upon arrival in the north, a short drive will take you to Húsavík, famously known as “the whale capital of Iceland” and the oldest settlement in the country according to the Book of Settlement. After checking into your accommodations, enjoy a late dinner. If there’s still energy to spare, unwind with a drink at the hotel bar and some knitting, or take an evening stroll to the bar featured in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams – Watching this film before the trip is highly recommended to immerse yourself in the north coast vibes!
Enjoy a tasty breakfast, then get ready for a special experience: a visit to Mórúnir Yarns at Lón farmstead, just a 30-minute drive along the rugged Atlantic coast. Guðríður, your host, will introduce you to the intelligent Icelandic Leadersheep, known for their soft, colorful wool. Guðríður is also a talented dyer with a studio full of exquisite skeins for you to explore!
Back in Húsavík, you’ll have the afternoon free to enjoy lunch at the Home Bakery or another local spot, browse for wooly finds, visit the town’s fascinating history museum, or search for plötulopi (unspun lopi-style yarn) in the hardware store. Yes, the hardware store!
Later, discover the marine wonders of the bay at the renowned Whale Museum. Then, unwind with a scenic drive to GeoSea, one of Iceland’s most beautifully situated geothermal baths. After dinner, if you still have some energy, you can either explore the town’s nightlife or enjoy a cozy evening of knitting together.
This morning, set off westward to Skagafjörður for a day full of adventures! Your first stop will be Godafoss, the spectacular “Waterfall of the Gods.” Next, enjoy a special walk with “the hidden people” at Akureyri’s enchanting botanical garden.
Lunch will be with the vibrant yarn shop owners Íris and Sveina, followed by a visit to their shop, Garn í gangi (Yarn in Progress).
As you continue west, you’ll reach your destination for the day at Hofsstaðir, a charming farmstead guest house on the north coast. Here, you’ll savor a dinner made from local produce while enjoying rooms and dining areas with breathtaking, serene surroundings.
Embark on another day rich with history and exploration in the west, where the Icelandic sagas were written in the 13th century. Start with a visit to Glaumbær, a beautifully restored turf house that provides a glimpse into traditional Icelandic living. Next, journey deep into Skagafjörður’s farmland region to Stórhóll, home to Icelandic goats, sheep, and the Rúnalist gallery. Farmer and textile artist Sigrún will share a taste of her farm’s produce and invite you to explore the vibrant, farm-grown Icelandic lopi yarn. Some of the skeins even bear the name of the sheep who provided the fleece!
The adventures continue as you reach Blönduós, where a special welcome awaits at the Icelandic Textile Museum. This museum is the perfect place to discover the wool crafts preserved by Icelandic women over centuries.
Finally, head to Borgarfjörður for a two-night stay at the charming Hotel Á, situated alongside the glacial river Hvítá. With the hotel to yourselves, enjoy the hotel’s rustic charm, relax with a cup of tea or something stronger, and savor some stress-free knitting time in a tranquil setting.
Start the day with a thrilling exploration of Langjökull, the world’s longest man-made glacier cave, and gear up for a ride in a monster vehicle to the top of the glacial ice cap. Don’t forget your sunglasses! The glare from the glacier can be bright and you’ll want to enjoy the view.
After the glacier adventure, enjoy a light buffet lunch at the Húsafell bistro, or (as the Icelanders enjoy the most) go to the hot dog counter and have a pylsa með öllu. (That’s a hot dog, coca-cola and Prince Polo for dessert.) On the way back, stop to marvel at the dramatic Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, where springwater and meltwater from the glaciers cascade through the lava fields into the river Hvítá.
Continue with a visit to Háafell farm, which plays a crucial role in preserving the Icelandic goat breed. Then, unwind at Krauma geothermal baths & spa, located near Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. After a day full of adventures, gather for a farm-to-table dinner and enjoy a relaxing evening back at the hotel.
On Friday, the journey continues south with a three-night stay at the luxurious 360 Boutique Hotel. Before departing the west, stop in Borgarnes for a visit to The Settlement Center museum, where you can enjoy an incredible lunch buffet—definitely not to be missed! Explore the local shops for unique wool products, sweaters, and other handcrafted goods to bring home.
After lunch, the group will head to Thingvellir National Park, a site where Icelandic history and nature converge. As you stroll through the park, Fiber Ambassador Anna will share insights into the historical significance and geological marvels of the area. The day concludes with a stop in Selfoss for dinner at the Old Dairy, with a possible treat of ice cream to top off the evening.
Spend today deep diving into all-things-Icelandic-wool. Start the day with a visit to Uppspuni Mini-mill, home of the first independent, small-scale spinning mill in the country. From there, continue through the lush southern farmlands to explore a new breed of sheep, the Feld (pelt) sheep. During this time of year, the sheep are kept close to home, offering a chance to interact with them, pet goats, or enjoy the company of other farm animals. And don’t forget to give the friendly farm dogs a belly rub or play fetch with them!
If the weather is pleasant, enjoy a picnic lunch before heading back to the hotel. Conclude the day with a show and tell of your week’s purchases and brainstorm new projects together.
Begin your final full day at the Geothermal Exhibition to see how Iceland harnesses geothermal energy to power nearly every home. You’ll also get a glimpse at a new technology, Carbfix, which converts CO2 into stone within two years – potentially helping to combat global warming.
Next, immerse yourself in the dramatic Icelandic landscape one last time as you drive along the black sand beaches of the south coast, capturing stunning photographs along the way. Enjoy lunch in the quaint village of Eyrarbakki, an old fishing and trading hub with charming original houses. If the weather cooperates, you’ll be treated to views of lighthouses, ocean waves, ice-capped volcanoes, and distant mountains.
The last stop of the south coast adventure is at Hespuhúsið (Hespa Yarns), a natural dye studio run by Guðrún, where you can explore vibrant dyeing pots and a beautiful array of colorful skeins. In true Icelandic hospitality, Guðrún will offer coffee, homemade cakes, and cookies, along with the company of a friendly farm dog.
Return to the hotel to organize and pack before gathering for a final farewell dinner to conclude your Icelandic journey.
On the final morning, enjoy breakfast before setting off for Keflavík Airport. The drive takes about an hour and a half, so departure will be timed to accommodate the earliest flight schedules.
(For all Trans-Atlantic flights, we recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before departure to ensure a smooth check-in process.)
